A lot of ear care happens out of sight, and you are simply told what to think. I do it the other way round. Using digital diagnostic tools, the view inside your ear canal goes up on screen so you can see the wax, the eardrum and the result for yourself. It keeps everything honest and easy to understand.

There is no single right answer for every ear. After the initial look I will recommend whichever approach suits your ear health best, and explain why. Both are comfortable and suitable from age 12.

Microsuction

A fine, low-pressure suction lifts the wax away while I watch the canal directly the whole time. No water, no flushing, nothing pressed inward. It is the same technique relied on in hospital ENT clinics, which is exactly why it is considered one of the safest ways to clear an ear.

Warm water irrigation

A softly controlled flow of warm water eases suitable wax free once I have checked your ear history and confirmed it is a safe fit for you. Steady, unhurried and gentle, it is a good option when the wax has been softened well in the days beforehand.

What to expect on the day.

A proper look first

Every visit starts with a careful inspection of both ears. If treatment is needed I will suggest the most suitable method, carry it out, and finish with aftercare and prevention advice. Most people find a routine check around every six months keeps things clear.

Before you book

Soften the wax first

Popping in a little olive oil spray or drops for two or three days beforehand softens the wax nicely. It makes the whole appointment quicker, easier and more comfortable, whichever method we use.

Frequently asked questions.

Will it hurt?

It should not. Microsuction is gentle and most people find it perfectly comfortable, aside from a soft suction sound near the ear. If anything ever feels sore, I stop right away.

How long will I need?

Plan for roughly 15 to 30 minutes. That covers a full examination of both ears as well as the removal itself, so there is no rushing.

What happens if there is no wax to remove?

You are never charged the full fee for nothing. If there is no wax to clear, you pay a reduced consultation fee and leave with a clear picture of what I found.

Should I use olive oil beforehand?

Yes, if you are able to. A few days of olive oil spray or drops before your visit softens the wax and makes it far easier and more comfortable to remove.

Is microsuction actually safe?

It is. Because nothing is ever pushed into the ear and I keep the canal in direct view throughout, it is regarded as one of the safest options available. It is the same method used in hospital ENT departments.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with me and usually be seen in a matter of days rather than waiting weeks.

How often should ears be cleared?

It really varies from person to person. Some ears need attention every six to twelve months, others hardly ever. I will give you an honest steer based on what I see at your visit.

How do I know if wax is building up?

Common signs include a blocked or full feeling, muffled hearing, ringing in the ears, earache, a touch of dizziness, or a hearing aid that starts to whistle.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes, treatment is suitable from age 12 upwards.
